On 04 June 2010 Rajneeti is released.
Rajneeti
Prakash Jha's multi starrer political drama Rajneeti hits theatres today. Jha's love for socio-political and cast based issues isn't new in the least. While his film Mrityudand exposed gender biases, Gangajal brought to the forefront corruption in the police machinery. His latest offering Rajneeti, a much talked about controversial film takes you through a thorough jounrey of politics, selfish interests and betrayals.
A powerful Rashtriya Party is thrown off kilter when its central leader is struck by paralysis. While his younger brother takes over the party, a fierce battle for power ensues between the sons of the two brothers. This battle will claim many lives and lave you wondering why anyone would want to be a part of such a nasty game.
Jha definitely understood the squalor of Indian politics but he took it a bit too far. Even though Jha shows us stuff we already know, we like his film for his ability to execute the known and commonplace with such vividness. Where he fails however, is in piling up the number of bodies that he does. Had he restricted politics to a game of wit amongst the mercenaries and power hungry, Rajneeti would have been more appealing. Instead, he chose to use murder or assasination, which happens very rarely in politics, as his primary weapon.
Most actors and there are quite a few in Rajneeti pleasatnly surprise us. To begin with, Arjun Rampal delivers one smashing performance, proving that he has definitely come off age. Katrina Kaif and Nana Patekar are the other two actors who deserve a lot of commnedation. As for Ranbir Kapoor, the actor delivers a powerful performance but gets betrayed by his chocolate boy looks. Ajay Devgan and Manoj Bajpai are quite wasted in the film.
